Epidemic Renovictions Affecting Tenants
On December 30 2019, one of our litigation paralegals, Randy McLin, appeared on CBC News to talk about the growing issues of 'renovictions'. A renoviction occurs when a landlord evicts a tenant under the guise of doing renovations while with the bad faith intent to get rid of tenured tenants so to subsequently move in fresh tenants at higher rents.
Tenants don't need to move out just because they have received a notice from the landlord; and instead, tenants should challenge suspected bad faith evictions before the Landlord Tenant Board. Tenants should also work collaboratively with other tenants within the building to help ensure success in the fight.
